A brief history
Westgarth Picture Theatre was built in 1921. The architecturally striking theatre combines 1920’s classical features with art-deco and modernistic decorative styling. It ran as a suburban cinema until the 1970s, when it was used for showing Greek films. From 1976 to 1996 it was the Valhalla, a mecca for art films and film buffs. In 1996 it renewed life as the Westgarth Cinema. This landmark is still an operating theatre today, with five gorgeous auditoria. It is a vibrant local beacon, that has a role in the Darebin lifestyle and story. The Westgarth Theatre is Listed on the National Trust Register of Historic Buildings.
